Terre Haute Urban Mapping Project

The geographical boundary of this project is east to 13th Street, south to Poplar Street, west to the Wabash River, and north to Ash Street in Terre Haute, Indiana. This pilot urban mapping project will last for two years from January 2003 to December 2004, with financial support from ISU Foundation. The first phase of the project (January to May, 2003) aims at creating following GIS data layers: (1) parcel, (2) building footprints, (3) pavement, and (4) land use zoning in three different years using computer software from ESRI’s ArcView GIS 3.3 and ARCGIS 8.3. Currently, four doctoral students, one master student, two undergraduate students, and one post-doctoral research scientist from the Department of Geography, Geology, and Anthropology at ISU are working on the project, under the direction of Dr. Qihao Weng. An Internet-based GIS has been developed using ESRI’s ARCIMS software, so that the data layers created during the first phase, as well as other GIS data layers related to Terre Haute City are able to display and distributed over the Internet.

Examples of the produced data layers include a parcel map containing the boundary and location of each parcel, which is linked to an attribute table describing area, perimeter, parcel ID, block ID, ownership, land value, property tax, history, and other related information. The house footprint map contains all the houses and structures larger than 10 square meters in dimension. Information on housing conditions, construction material, history, and real estate information can be linked to these houses.
